I have a Fire HD 7 and had previously installed the file manager app, ES File Explorer. I had been wanting to find a means of having the Project Gutenberg books, that I had easily downloaded some time ago to my Kindle Keyboard eReader, also available on the Fire. I agree with some previous comments (see John McLeod at the 1-star review of Fairchild) that Moon+ Reader works well with ES File Explorer. But Moon+[+++++] Reader does require some getting used to and the exploration of its astoundingly many features before one realizes its potential. The learning curve can be either an enjoyable challenge or a frustrating futility. In the end, I find that I now have no problem downloading epub books from the catalogs provided by Moon+ Reader / MR+. The ManyBooks catalog has numerous Gutenberg books. If you find what you want in a catalog, that would seem to be easiest way.

At least some Mobi / AZW (i.e. Kindle eReader format) books can be downloaded from Gutenberg to the MR+ file in ES File Explorer. (Whether or not one runs into a problem regards the proprietary DRM (?) situation, I am yet to discover.) I am yet somewhat confused on this, but it would seem that if you choose MR+ from Silk when selecting from Gutenberg, the downloaded books show up in ES File Explorer's Book/MoonReader directory. Other places to look for downloaded books are in the Silk Browser and the Download file of ES File Explorer. If found in the later, you may want to cut or copy the book and then paste it in the MR+ file. Also be aware that there is an import option in the MR+ app which enables you to import a book or books, from the file manager, to your My Shelf. Books can be imported either from ES File Explorer's Download file or from its Books/MR+ file. Note that the books downloaded from Gutenberg have a mix of obscure numbers and letters with extensions. Once they have been downloaded you can use ES File Explorer to provide a more meaningful name. Be sure to addend the file name with .epub or .mobi file extension as appropriate.

There does seem to be at least one bug in this free version of MR+. If you choose one of the non-functional menu items associated with the MR+ icons at the bottom of the screen, the screen can freeze. In that case you can use the Kindle's home icon and return to ES File Explorer. Reopen the book from there.

I have found that some reconfiguration is needed to allow you to leave a book and return to the My Shelf (i.e., the book case) as opposed to a freeze screen or exiting the app. To prevent a screen freeze or exit, one can assign the Kindle Back Key for this purpose. Open any book, press the settings icon at the bottom right of the screen, and choose "Control Options." I assigned the Kindle "Back Key" to MR+'s "Back to the Book Shelf." It may be necessary to tap the Back Key a couple of times. Otherwise, the procedure works great!

As noted above, the preferred means of downloading books outside of Amazon's domain is via a catalog. MR+ provides a catalog of selected books from Gutenberg and also catalogs from ManyBooks, Smashwords, and user submitted catalogs called Moon+ Catalogs. There is also the ability to manually create your own custom OPDS (?) catalog. I was easily able to download a couple books by Thomas Huxley from MR+'s catalog and many other books from ManyBooks. ManyBooks, accessed through MR+ Network connections, has a quite extensive and growing listing of Gutenberg books.

With somewhat more effort, books can also be downloaded directly from Gutenberg via the Silk browser. (My expertise in this area is being worked on.) At long last, I have been successful opening Darwin's ORIGINS OF SPECIES, complete with images, that I downloaded using the Silk browser directly from Gutenberg. The book is an epub which is the preferred format, with or without images. If, by mistake or intention, you choose, from Silk, to download to the Silk directory rather than MoonReader's, you can copy and paste to the later directory from Silk's (which is in the Download directory as opposed to the Book's directory).

The commenter, McLeod, noted that he organizes his books by going to ES File Manager and creating additional folders under Books/MoonReader. While that undoubtedly works, and I may do that also, I have found that using the MR+ app itself to be quite adequate. One can create and assign various tags --- e.g.: fiction, non-fiction, science, reference, etc. ---- to each book and then have those books show up in the book case or book cases of choice. I also have labeled the books that I don't prefer to have on My Shelf with the Finished reading label. Then when I have the Reading label checked (clock / pie chart at the top right), only the books I do want to show up on My Shelf do so.

Currently missing is an offline dictionary that would be integrated with MR+. I have downloaded the Fora Dictionary app as instructed by MR+ and that looks like it ought to work great if I can but figure out where to get the data file from and then where to place said file. (A fellow really needs his very own Tech. department.) The on-line Wikipedia access seems to work fine.

From my standpoint and use profile, with the inclusion of a dictionary and the full enabling of all menu keys, the Moon+ Reader app would be beyond excellent (especially when considering the zero price). The addition of a file manager as part of a package might make sense for those who don't already have one. :)

UPDATE OF 5/6/'14: I have installed "English Language Package" app (the logo is a paperclip) which was designed specifically for Fora and is available at Amazon's Appstore. The app installs and extracts itself seemlessly, includes extensive word meanings, a thesaurus, and a link to Wikipedia. Marvelous!
