"Where Wolf" succeeds in subverting your expectations and delivering a fresh modern take on the classic monster tale. I love the band of unlikely heroes we get in Larry Cheney and Sophia Ploog, two down on their luck outcasts with contrasting personalities that mix together incredibly well. Larry Cheney fits into the modern "slacker man-child" archetype, but manages to rarely feel like a cliche thanks to some solid writing and an authenticity that makes him relatable. Though the book has an overall humorous tone, writer Rob Saucedo still deliver thrills with some unexpected and very brutal deaths that have serious consequences. The deaths serve to make you feel like some of these characters may not get out alive.

Illustrator Debora Lancianese's work is exceptional. The style makes me think of Scooby Doo at times, but also evokes memories of the black and white illustrated classics I used to read such as Around the World in 80 Days. The black and white serves to make this feel like a classic tale, and juxtaposes nicely with Rob's more modern take on the story and characters. This very much is a love letter to the freaks, the weirdos, the outcasts... Those with unusual hobbies and interests, who feel lost and are yearning for something exciting.

I think the most important takeaway was how the furry community is represented in the story. This is a sub-culture I vaguely knew about through an old friend who became apart of it in high school, and learning about the community through him first made this read a unique experience as it does somewhat of a deep dive into the mindset of a furry. We often judge those with more "off-kilter" lifestyles, hobbies, fetishes, etc... But at the end of the day, we are all just a bunch of weirdos living in our own little bubbles of existence romanticizing being someone or somewhere other than who or where we are.

So yeah, this was a really solid addition to my ever-growing collection of graphic novels. I love the modern spins comic writers have been taking on classic tales told a thousand times, especially when they use these stories as an opportunity to explore or say something we don't usually hear about. My only critique is one of those "This is how I would've done it" or "This is what I thought it was going to be" critiques. I think the idea of a real werewolf hiding amongst a furry convention is a concept that was underutilized in the overall narrative, but that's so minor that I just erased the sentence two or three times before deciding I needed to add that in so I wasn't just kissing @$$ the whole review. I had a lot of fun with this. Give it a read!
