OK I know you sports and news freaks out there won't like Philo for they have next to nothing in that line. You guys/gals can move on and pay the big bucks and be happy.
I have had streaming services since day 1 when Sling started. I have had Sling little rough on start up but since have gotten their act together. PSVue good from day one never an issue but slight bit expensive and too many channels we don't want or watch. Youtube works great no complaints but don't have some of my favorite channels and also expensive. Directtv Now Terrible at start up. Has improved big time but still has issues. I have only 10 MB service here and Direct TV now is the only one that gives me buffering issues. Sometimes just flat out quit and have to go back to restart app. ESPN seems to be a real problem with direct for other channels rarely had issues but ESPN lots of issues drop back to SD at times. None of the other services had this issue with ESPN or any channels.
I don't watch sports much except ncaa basketball and nfl football. Luckily I live close enough to off air repeaters I get all my networks off antenna. My solution for high prices and getting what I wanted to watch was Philo. $18/ month almost every channel I want and my locals off antenna. Philo has no locals may be deal breaker for those of you who have been brought up with cable. No news channels (CNN, CNBC, FOX, etc. which I watched occasionally but then really worth triple the cost for them NO!
Philo just flat out works. The good excellent picture quality, works with almost all the apps TLC GO etc.. , Get connected through your phone and 7 day trail with no credit card needed. They also have nice feature where any show you watch will automatically start at the beginning. You can hold down on > to make it go to live if you like. No buffering ever, no drop outs, no dropping back to SD or worse, free DVR service which could use some improvement but works well. 3 streams instead of 2 or one with Sling. The bad is guide. Being the guide is weak spot on most streaming services this one is not very user friendly. The guide doesn't go out but a few days in advance so if you want to record something next week it's an issue. Can be done but much harder to do so. I can't seem to just go to show in future and click on it like some others which popped up and asked just this show or series. Maybe doing something wrong but not as user friendly as others. DVR free works well but interface needs some work. The only other issue also guide related. You can't block channels you never watch from the guide. You can put your favorites first but the others are still there. Guide not for informative and flat out ugly. Take some getting use to. All in all it all works be it somewhat a pain. Pix quality tad better then DirectvNow and on par with others. DVR free and works but needs some work as well on the guide issues and scrolling through entire series to find a program is a pain as well. No idea which you have watched and you can't delete individual programs. Less then 1/3 the cost of others I can live with it and I'm sure Philo will eventually get the guide/DVR issues cleared up at some point.
I have listed best to worse IMO only. Philo takes top spot loads quickly and no buffering or pix quality issues. 2nd, 3rd and 4th pretty much depends on you personally and if you want locals which you must pay for or can be happy with off air. All are about $55 or more / month so cost vs what you can live with.
You tube works great but some key channels missing had no issues with buffering and excellent guide DVR but expensive. PSVue same cost issue but works flawlessly very few buffering issues. Sling I must put 4th though they have excellent guide and pricing very good they have no basic DVR free, channels broken up into to packages and made sure to overlap so you pay twice for some channels. Seem to have spit up sports channels as well to make you pay the tariff. Coming from a company which started in satellite service fighting cable seems to have gone over to the dark side. I will be using their service few months each year for ESPN but $20 plus $18 for Philo adds to $38 no where close to $50.
Now not mentioned Hulu live TV and the new AT&T which is free for unlimited AT&T phone users. Hulu I have not used for it is pricey so have no onion. AT&T never used so can't say but probably using same technology as DirectTVNOW for they own them as well. I wouldn't expect it to be any better but hey you paying big bucks for unlimited phone service FREE can't be beat. Very limited channels though but can't complain if free always get missing channels from another stream.
All above is from my own personal experience at my location and piss poor ISP service. No competition allowed. Another big screw up by the FCC and state of Florida which of course are corporate/ cable friendly screw the consumer. You results may differ and each service gives you free trail which is no where near long enough to really get a feel for their service. You can cancel anytime , change providers, most you can loose is one month of cost. Good luck hope this helps someone.
Philo like others has gone up to $20 I believe for new customers. Slightly bigger package but only one offered now. I was grandfathered in so $18 for me and I can switch back and forth between packages which no longer exist for new customers. I do wish they would offer a sport package even if only ESPN for extra fee then I wouldn't have to have another streaming service at all.
