UPDATE 4/8/21 - Maybe it's because of a recent update from the developers of the ESPN app, or it's an issue with Fire TV, but the app is no longer holding your place if you pause a game or show and leave the app. I used to be able to go back into the app, a day or week later even, and the game I was watching resumes automatically from where I left off. Now, it will still return me to the game, but it starts over from the beginning. I'm beginning to mark down the time so I can fast-forward to where I left off. It's a painful issue.

UPDATE: 10/26/20 - So, the app is now stating that my device needs to be updated and lists ways in which to update my Fire TV. I've checked with Amazon and Fire OS 6.2.7.3 is the current OS for my Fire TV (3rd Gen) - which ESPN+ lists on their own website as being a device they are compatible with. There are threads out there of many people experiencing the same problems, since September... some claiming a fix is to put the Fire in sleep mode for 3 hours (maybe worked for some, but not all). So, as fun as this experience has been, I have to now spend time writing this so that maybe someone at ESPN or Amazon will read this as evidence that there is clearly a development problem with creating and maintaining this app.

Old review:

I've been so excited about the coming of ESPN+. That said, I'm not a big sports fan and don't spend hours on the weekends ignoring my family while I watch "the game," but I do love to stream a game while I'm working from home, or catch the first half of a match while I'm cooking, etc. And the Disney+ bundle is a very comfortable price.

But the app, especially on Fire TV, is horrendous. Why on earth can't my Fire TV hold onto the app? I have to re-download it just about every time I want to open it. And, I have to update it every time, too. Don't the developers, contracted or otherwise, work for Disney - one of the wealthiest companies in the world? How can they be getting this so wrong?

The interface is awful, too. Finding content, or related content to what you're interested in is so clunky. They push programming like a street vendor pushes used handbags. No, I'm not interested in UFC or WWE, or whatever other mindless-junk you'd rather I watch.

Why is it not simple to add your favorites - teams, leagues, etc., to your profile and find what you want more easily? Or, at the very least have a "resume watching" section so you don't have to go hunting for the last game you're we're in the middle of watching.

I know, in comparison, my subscription-money is small potatoes up against ad-dollars and cable subsidies, but I AM your customer. I AM your viewer.

Does anyone at ESPN use this app? Anyone at the big conference tables where they dream up ideas, do you use this app? And, like it?

Honestly, if this ever goes up in price (which I'm sure it will), I will not renew unless the app and viewer experience is improved. I'm not paying more for "good enough."
