We have Hulu but it didn't air all of the NHL games (our teams are Detroit and NY despite living in VA) The only way to skip commercials was to record the game first which rapidly filled our Hulu dvr space. We paid for one month of NHL.tv as a trial and upgraded to the season for $99, paying the difference only. The streaming quality is as good as the tv's picture quality and internet reception. Our Samsung picture is absolutely amazing and the LG is adequate but not nearly as crisp and vibrant. The fast forward feature is tricky. I find myself going way too fast through commercials and into the next period. Definitely a learning curve. I wish the fast forward showed the current clips like Hulu so I could gauge when to stop. Instead we're fast forwarding approximately 1:45 for commercial breaks and 18 minutes for intermission. Not a deal breaker for us. The only blackouts we're experiencing is exactly what the fine print stated when signing up. We live in VA so the Capitals games are blacked out on NHL channel. HOWEVER, that's because they're available on the local channel and therefore free. The NHL doesn't play local games in your zip code or the Stanley Cup playoffs to avoid competition with the contract they have with NBC. If you don't have cable or streaming services like Hulu, you would lose access to the local games and the Playoffs. We use the Roku in one room and Fire in another. I prefer the setup NHL.tv uses on the Fire. It's a better interface IMO. We love the ability to turn off the scores so the outcomes of the games aren't ruined when searching for something to watch from the previous day(s). You can listen to the game from the home or away team announcers. Nice feature since the Capitals announcers are completely biased and annoying to hear. My husband enjoys hearing the Islanders announcers when listening to his team play and I opt to listen to the away announcers despite being a Red Wings fans; their announcers are quite dull. I also like the ability to turn off phone notifications since I downloaded the app on my iphone. But you can opt to be notified when you're team is playing, what's the current score and when they're close to finishing the period, etc. We prefer to binge watch our favorite games in the evenings and weekends and have turned off the outside world to fully enjoy the game. Since we can't possibly watch all the games played, there's the option to watch a game recap or condensed version. It's 8-9 minutes long and replays all the shots on goal and highlights of the game so you can keep up on the all of teams' performance during the season as we advance towards the playoffs. A very nice feature to have. All around we're thrilled to have the app and highly recommend it.
