The book is a thought-provoking exploration of the myriad influences that shaped what we now recognize as Western civilization. It attempts to broaden the typical Western-centric historical narrative by tracing the roots of what we now call "the West" across a vast 4,000-year timeline. For readers accustomed to history focused primarily on post-16th century events or Greco-Roman origins, this is a refreshing perspective on the interconnected nature of global civilizations.

In some ways, the author should be commended for her effort to deconstruct the notion of "the West" as an isolated entity. The examples used may not be new to anyone somewhat familiar with the developments of non-European civilizations, but the book does a good job compiling the examples. The examples like Egyptian, Middle Eastern or Indian mathematical concepts at different times influencing Greek scholars, or the transmission of silk and spices from China and India impacting European economies and societies are neither novel nor more than what one comes across in many other works. However, they serve the purpose well.

The book's ambitious scope is also its Achilles' heel. The limited purpose forces the author to selectively highlight what she deems relatable concepts from a vast historical timeline. Some discussions feel rushed or abruptly concluded. While the book aims to highlight contributions from various cultures, the treatment of Indian and Chinese civilizations, as well as Slavic cultures, often feels superficial. This cursory examination risks perpetuating other misconceptions or oversimplifications.

Additionally, the book misses an opportunity to explore the modern phenomenon of nation-state identities and their tendency to retroactively construct narratives of deep-rooted cultural continuity. Just as the concept of the "West" is a recent invention, so too are many of the national identities that seek to establish ancient origins.

The anachronisms of modern classifications have real positives, notwithstanding the negatives discussed in the book and many others in political realms. While a granular, detailed view of history might reveal a far more complex picture, broad categorizations can be valuable in making sense of the past and drawing meaningful connections.

The book is not a path-breaking work, as outside the main theme, most of what it discusses would be familiar to any reader with some familiarity with non-Western civilizations.
