For starters I have to say that the path this book took was unexpected, good but unexpected. Kylo was the star of the show. And Kaivon was all heart. I thought Harlee was going to be weak but she really wasn’t. She was actually a tough cookie with a big heart. I had two issues w/this book.

The first issue I had w/this book was I didn’t get how it transitioned from Urban Fiction into Christian Fiction in the second half. I understand redemption & all that but the stuff these dudes were doing was not for the faint of heart, I mean it was straight Quinton Tarantino gruesome killing & torturing w/no remorse. They were judge, jury & executioner w/no remorse. And we hit the second half & it literally becomes all about God like in every paragraph God this & God that but again w/no remorse for the killing, torturing, drug dealing & etc. It was weird because it was like massive overkill like it was done w/a sledgehammer. I didn’t get it. I actually stopped to double check what genre I was reading. And yes I’ve read books where characters seek redemption or circumstances occur that make them seek or contemplate God & ok no problem but this was beyond especially for it to be so heavy in killing & whatnot. I’ve even read Love Belvin & she’s obsessed w/converting all her characters to Christianity & making them have period sex. So it’s not something I haven’t seen before but geez it was ridiculously heavy handed.

My other issue was the boys mother. Where was her accountability for allowing the abuse to her boys like I didn’t get how the author breezed passed that like what. How is it that she stood by & let what happen to Kylo take place & did nothing & made Kai carry the burden he did for having to do what he did. But she was supposed to be this big time street G. Umm no ma’am. And the thing that really bugged me abt her character was that she knew the deal when she was pregnant w/Kai because of what happened & she stayed & did nothing but bring her kids into that & didn’t protect them. But like I said the author really cruised by that well she tried to but it did not go unnoticed.

Despite these 2 issues the book is good. The author created some quality characters with good development & compelling circumstances. I plan on giving Kylo’s book a read but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t skeptical because he’s really a gem but he’s that character that everyone wants to win because he needs & deserves it but because he’s beloved & complicated he’s usually the type of character that authors totally screw up & ruin when it comes time for their book. So we’ll see.
