This is the sixth book, written/edited by Jonathan Pearce, that I have read, and as the others, it makes an excellent and highly informative read.
It includes seven essays in Part 1, 'Deconstructing God', followed by thirteen essays in Part 2, 'Reflecting on godlessness in modern society; after this, there are a further six essays (including the afterword) in Part 3, 'Looking forward to a future in a godless world'.
The essays are written by persons who offer their own perspective on the serious flaws in religious belief, with some recounting their own experiences.
The first essay, 'Not seeing OmniGod(tm) through philosophy and logic', is written by the editor and deals with the inherent problems produced by classical theism. His statement at the beginning gives a taste of the overall essay: "there are as many versions of God as there are believers, and theists of various stripes can always shift the goalposts." He describes how the concept of creation surely challenges the idea of a perfect God, and this is followed by a discussion of how the world (or universe)
certainly fails to confirm the perfection that one would expect if created by a perfect being.
The essays included in this book cover an extremely wide range of subjects, and two that I found to be the most interesting, as well as the most disturbing, revealed the considerable difficulties encountered when criticizing Christianity and/or advocating atheism.
One essay, written by someone raised as a Christian fundamentalist in the United Kingdom, describes his attempts to publicize the activities of a Christian educational group and the consistently negative response of the media. This of course invalidates what the writer terms the "persecution complex" of Christianity, especially among evangelicals. The writer's account clearly demonstrates that the media is not eager to attack Christianity - quite the reverse, in fact.
Another essay-writer describes the appalling situation in America for atheists and the serious difficulties that they face. The writer remarks on how the evangelical church supports the political right, and observes: "We've already seen Trump administration move in the direction of letting pastors endorse candidates from the pulpit without losing their churches' tax breaks, letting parents use taxpayer money to send their kids to private religious schools, lettings faith-based business owners discriminate against LGBT customers, and letting government agencies ignore the science of climate change." In sum, the writer exposes and highlights the tremendous damage that the evangelical church in America causes not only to the American people, but the world at large.
Another essay-writer deals with the situations that follow when someone abandons Islam in an Islamic country. He writes "Becoming an atheist means losing your community...So what is your choice? Do you announce the fact that you are an atheist? Of course you can't - you could be hanged."
The above are a summary of just a few of the essays in this book: each one relates to a recognition of the truth and reality of atheism, along with the difficulties and benefits arising from this.
The book is rightly described as "a cornucopia of skeptical delights...from philosophy to psychology, politics to cinema, the military to folklore. It's all here in glorious variety".
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in different atheistic opinions.
