ABOUT THE ARTIST SULLY have completed their northern incubation period and are preparing, once again, to enter the arms of North America. Ever since the late 2001 Canadian release of Bright Lights, SULLY`s brand of expansive, hard-hitting pop has garnered them excellent reviews, TV appearances, a short-listed JUNO (the Canadian Grammy) award nomination, a CBC "Great Canadian Music Dream" placement, and most importantly, an opportunity to record their 4th album with Sonic Youth sound-guru Tim Glasgow. SULLY are back in the spotlight and reflecting light brighter than ever. The band is made up of a group of talented musicians including: Ian Duke (percussion), Dan McCormick (keyboards), Paul Prince (bass), Scott Strachan (guitar) and the unique vocals of Becke Gainforth. Becke, who was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year from Ottawa's #1 rock station 'The Bear', uniquely states, "The music expresses a pent up, mixed up and slightly deranged bag of emotions." Beginning as a basement jam in Ottawa, Canada, SULLY formed in 1995. That same year, the band decided to release their first album independently and burst into the Canadian music scene gaining swift attention. During the mounting success of their first album, SULLY had already started working on I Have Much to Report. This set of songs was different than their debut as it swayed into a darker, more experimental place. After releasing this album through a Toronto independent label, SULLY was quickly snapped up by Nettwerk in 1998. They were immediately used as raw material for the late 90`s re-mix craze and were showcased on Plastic Compilation (Vol. 1) which included artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Chemical Brothers, and Propellorheads. This was followed up by the aforementioned album, I Have Much to Report. SULLY was featured in numerous North American publications (Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, Option, Chicago Tribune, Ottawa Xpress, NOW Magazine, and many more) with favorable reviews. After playing shows across the U.S. and Canada, SULLY began to accumulate a large fan base and the album remained in the top 5 position on the College Charts for several weeks. Approaching the cusp of the Millennium, the band decided to travel the independent route once again and are still finding success. Their music is and has been consistently placed in a variety of film or video situations such as Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (CBC film,1998), Ecstasy (film,1996), Bliss (TV, 2002), Get A Life (TVO,1999), Drop in (MTV-Canada, fall 2002), and a commercial for Cinematheque (a division of the Toronto International Film Festival,1996). The song Fidget landed in the #1 spot for Pop on Garageband.com, a website for indie artists featuring over 30,000 bands. A few months later, they shot their first video, Half of Once, with one of the competitive MuchMusic VideoFact grants. Most recently they have been chosen by a panel of industry judges to perform on a broadcast special for CBC (National TV in Canada) called "The Great Canadian Music Dream" in January 2003. With the release of Bright Lights, SULLY reaches a place that is truly their own. These songs are not about clear thoughts, rational thinking and specific emotion, but rather from a world where they believe happiness and contentment is blasé. Drummer Ian Duke says, "Music can be a soundtrack to your life. Particularly with people who are having a bad time. In this case, we choose to give them their dignity, as opposed to offering pity, which is what most insipid pop music does." SULLY has maintained their philosophy of focusing on a collective music writing style. Vocalist Becke Gainforth thinks they have more fun remaining in an uncertain, unpredictable place. "It keeps our imaginations fresh and instincts alive, which in turn, retains the risk in our music." *Sully is currently in the studio working on their 4th album (anticipated release fall 2002) with Tim Glasgow, from Sonic Youth`s Murray Street studio.
