I love to capture people in watercolor. I am intrigued by human emotion and the human experience, which is why I intuitively choose the people I paint. They represent the common man, those who are not often noticed but still have their story to tell. I want to capture that moment and reveal the emotion behind the mask we all wear. Through the transparency of watercolor I build the character and complexity of a person, layer by layer. It is about capturing the expression, the moment, and the light. I work from black and white candid photographs taken during events or while traveling. The black and white format gives me the opportunity to see contrast clearly, which allows me to create my own palette. I use a single brush for the entire painting, a Raphael Kolinsky #16 and paint on Arches 300 lb. hot press watercolor paper. Rarely do I paint a background that places the subject in a particular location. I feel it is more important to focus entirely on the figure and the overall composition.
