Recommended for targeted testing and identification of microplastics in a surface water source–such as a pond, lake or river. Microplastics enter surface water bodies from an array of pollution and waste pathways–such as from tires rubbing against pavement, synthetic clothes, paint dust and microfibers. The impacts of microplastics on human health and wildlife are not well understood. This SimpleLab surface water test package provides all required materials to properly collect and submit a sample for certified laboratory testing. Reported results will include detailed analysis of microplastic concentrations broken down by size category and polymer type–for example polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polystyrene particles. Particles between 1 micron (μm) and 5 mm in size are quantified, and polymer types are identified for particles >10 μm. Methods for microplastics analysis are still developing and currently have many limitations. This test combines optical microscopy with polarized light microscopy to get a higher accuracy count of microplastics at small particle sizes (1-10μm), as well as Raman spectroscopy which is accurate at identifying polymer types down to 10μm.
